Συχνά υποστηρίζεται πως η ωραιότερη τέχνη πηγάζει από τις αντιξοότητες και κάτι τέτοιο συνέβη όταν ο παραγωγός Frits Wentink, ο φωτογράφος Erik Madigan Heck και η αγαπημένη ηθοποιός Tilda Swinton συνεργάστηκαν για το Safe Passage – ένα συναρπαστικό οπτικοακουστικό project εμπνευσμένο από την απώλεια. Αποτελούμενο από κλασσική, χορωδιακή και ηλεκτρονική μουσική σε τρεις «γραμμές», το album κυκλοφορεί από την Dekmantel μαζί με ένα 40φυλλο βιβλίο με επιπρόσθετες φωτογραφίες και ζωγραφιές και, επίσης, στην digital έκδοσή του με remixes από Matthew Herbert, The Soft Pink Truth, ByDub και East of Oceans.
Ο Ολλανδός παραγωγός και φημισμένος για τις καινοτομίες του Frits Wentink στήνει synths και controllers, προσφέροντας πάντοτε πειραματική -εκτός ορίων- ηλεκτρονική μουσική. Το συγκεκριμένο project ξεκίνησε με την προσπάθειά του να απεικονίσει μουσικά τη φωτογραφική δεινότητα του Αμερικανού Erik Madigan Heck. Αυτός, διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένος για την πλούσια και πειραματική χρήση των χρωμάτων, κατάφερε να κερδίσει λόγω αυτής της τεχνοτροπίας το υψηλού κύρους βραβείο International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award και, επιπλέον, μια θέση σε μέσα όπως The New York Times, Vanity Fair και Harper’s Bazaar.
Στα μέσα του project, η μητέρα του Erik νοσηλεύτηκε εξαιτίας επιπλοκών από τον καρκίνο του μαστού πριν να νοσήσει κι από τον Covid-19. Στεκόμενος δίπλα της και θέλοντας να ελαφρύνει το «πέρασμά» της έπαιζε διαρκώς το πρώτο μέρος της κυκλοφορίας και, όταν αυτή κατέληξε, αποφάσισε να τιμήσει με τρόπο μουσικό ένα soundtrack για την μετάβασή της και ονομάζοντάς το Safe Passage. Η συμμετοχή της ηθοποιού Tilda Swinton από την Σκωτία, νικήτρια του Βραβείου της Ακαδημίας, χάρισε στην μουσική ένα επιπλέον επίπεδο πνευματικότητας: Καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του album παρεμβαίνει τακτικά ψιθυρίζοντας αποσπάσματα της ποίησης του Heck, θολώνοντας τα «σύνορα» μεταξύ της μίας μουσικής φάσης από την άλλη.
Η μουσική κινείται σε τρεις γραμμές διαμέσου των δύο πλευρών του βινυλίου. Πλευρά πρώτη «Ασφάλεια»: Διακρίνεται από μια αίσθηση ελπίδας και στοχασμού καθώς πάλλεται από minimal συγχορδίες και κρουστά σε ambient και δυσαρμονικούς ήχους κλασσικού πιάνου. Πλευρά δεύτερη «Μετάβαση»: Απεικονίζει την αρχή της μετάβασης στην μετά θάνατον ζωή καθώς οι χορωδιακές φωνές αποκλίνουν σταδιακά και, τελικά, «καταρρέουν» ολοκληρωτικά πριν την τονική ανάπτυξη, που οδηγεί σε ένα ξέφρενο crescendo χορωδίας, dub techno και αγχωτικών ρυθμών με σκοπό την μεταβίβαση του συναισθήματος βίας της ψυχής καθώς εξέρχεται από τον κόσμο αυτό. Τέλος, με έναν καθαρτικό Επίλογο κάνουμε τον τελευταίο αποχαιρετισμό συνοδευόμενοι από ήπιους πιάνο ήχους επιστρέφοντας στην πραγματικότητα.
Εξαιτίας της συνεχιζόμενης και παγκόσμιας απώλειας ζωών από την πανδημία, το Safe Passage γίνεται το soundtrack όπου πολλοί άνθρωποι θα βρουν παρηγοριά ενθυμούμενοι τις θλιβερές αυτές μεταβάσεις από τη μία ζωή στην άλλη, στη διάρκεια αυτού του απροσδόκητου γεγονότος.

Frits Wentink: Μουσικός και συνθέτης ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής, γνωστός για τις πειραματικές του εξερευνήσεις πίσω από διάφορα καλλιτεχνικά ψευδώνυμα. Ένας από τους πιο σταθερούς παραγωγούς της χώρας έπειτα από το ντεμπούτο του το 2012, ο οποίος μάλιστα «μετράει» και δύο labels στο ενεργητικό του: Will & Ink και Bobby Donny.
Erik Madigan Heck: Αμερικανός καλλιτέχνης με έφεση στη φωτογραφία, τη ζωγραφική και τις ταινίες. Φημισμένος για τη πλούσια, πειραματική και με αφθονία χρήση των χρωμάτων, κάτοχος του International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award και FOAM Talent award έχει τακτική συνεισφορά σε δημοσιεύσεις στη The New York Times, Vanity Fair και Harper’s Bazaar. An exhilarating audiovisual collaboration for the depiction of loss.
It is often said that the best art comes out of adversity, and so it is that producer Frits Wentink, photographer Erik Madigan Heck and actress Tilda Swinton have collaborated on Safe Passage – a fascinating audio-visual project born out of loss. Consisting of classical,choral, and electronic music in three movements, the gatefold album is presented by Dekmantel with a 40 page booklet of additional photographs and paintings, as well as digital only remixes from Matthew Herbert, The Soft Pink Truth, BvDub and East of Oceans.
Dutch producer and renowned innovator Frits Wentink builds synthesizers and beautiful controllers and puts out always experimental, left of centre house music that pushes at the boundaries. This project initially started out as him attempting to musically illustrate the photography of American visual artist Erik Madigan Heck. The internationally renowned Heck is known for a lavish and experimental use of colour that has won him the prestigious International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award as well as make him a regular contributor to high profile media such as The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar.
Midway through the project, Eriks mother was hospitalised due to breast cancer complications before also contracting Covid-19. By her bedsides and as a means to ease her passage, he repetitively played the first portion of the score, and then, once she passed, he decided to commemorate the music’s function as a soundtrack for her transition to afterlife by naming it Safe Passage. The involvement of Academy Award–winning Scottish actress Tilda Swinton has lent the music an extra dimension of spirituality: throughout the album, she interjects whispered fragments of Heck’s poetry, blurring the lines between one phase of music and the next.
The music has three movements across two sides. Side A “Safe”: Has a sense of hope and reflection as it undulates from minimalist string and brass arrangements to ambient and dissonant classical piano. Side B “Passage”: Depicts the start of the transition into the afterlife as the voices of a choral madrigal ensemble gradually diverge, then break down entirely before a grand tonal expansion leads into a frenzied crescendo of choral vocals, hardened dub techno and anxious rhythms that convey the violence of the soul’s exit from this world. Finally, a cathartic Epilogue resets and bids farewell with the gentle sounds of a piano.
Because of the global on-going loss of life as a result of Covid-19, Safe Passage has become a soundtrack in which many people will find solace as they remember the sad transitions made from this life to the next during this unprecedented time in history.
The artists
Frits Wentink: Dutch electronic musician and composer, known for his experimental left-field house releases under an assortment of aliases. Wentink has been one of the Netherlands’ steadiest electronic producers since his first release in 2012, and runs the record labels Will & Ink and Bobby Donny.
Erik Madigan Heck: American artist working in photography, painting, and film. Known for his lavish and experimental use of color, Heck is the recipient of the prestigious International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award and the FOAM Talent award, and is a regular contributor to publications such as The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar. Heck’s work is exhibited internationally and has recently been the subject of solo museum surveys.
