Το εγχώριο design της Ολλανδίας είναι η σύγχρονη μεγάλη attraction της χώρας, που κάθε χρόνο περήφανα εκτίθεται στο Dutch Design Week, στην μικρή πόλη του Βορρά, το Eindhoven. Φέτος, βρεθήκαμε κι εμείς σε αυτή τη μεγάλη ευρωπαϊκή γιορτή του design και «χώσαμε» τη μούρη μας σε ένα πολύχρωμο καλειδοσκόπιο γεμάτο με design του τώρα και του αύριο. Αναμιχθήκαμε με τους χιλιάδες επισκέπτες απ’ όλο τον κόσμο και εξαντλήσαμε όλα τα “must see” και τα “hidden gems” αυτής της ανεξάντλητης έκθεσης, που φέτος παρουσίασε ιδέες και προτάσεις από σχεδόν 2.600 designers.
Από την περιοχή του Strijp-S, όπου χτυπά η φεστιβαλική καρδιά του DDW, μέχρι το απομακρυσμένο BioArt Lab με την πειραματική προσέγγιση, η βόλτα μας γέμισε εικόνες, ιδέες και προβληματισμούς. Η επίγευση που μας άφησε είναι αισιόδοξη και ανάλαφρη. Ωστόσο, η εμπειρία αποδείχτηκε μια καλή υπενθύμιση ότι οι επικαλυπτόμενες ιδέες, τα επαναλαμβανόμενα θέματα και οι συνεχείς αναφορές σε ιδέες του παρελθόντος θα είναι πάντα παρόν.
Μια στάση που έγινε επανειλημμένως είναι το Graduation Show του Design Academy of Eindhoven. Οι απόφοιτοι από τα προπτυχιακά και μεταπτυχιακά προγράμματα της Ακαδημίας, που έφερε το DDW σε αυτή την πόλη, δημιούργησαν φέτος ένα μωσαϊκό ιδεών, από 181 έργα. Εδώ, συναντήσαμε σοβαρές κριτικές προς την πρακτική των μουσείων, πρωτοποριακές τεχνολογικές προσεγγίσεις, προσωπικές καταγραφές, κριτικές έρευνες για το τώρα και προτάσεις κοινωνικού ενδιαφέροντος για το μέλλον.

Από τις υπόλοιπες στάσεις μας, μας απορρόφησε η έκθεση “Geo-Design: Junk – All That Is Solid Melts Into Trash” στο πάντα γεμάτο Van Abbemuseum. Πρόκειται για μια επιλογή από 18 κυρίως ερευνητικά projects από φοιτητές του DAE, που συνομιλούν για τα απόβλητα και τα e-waste σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο. Η έκθεση κατάφερε επιτυχημένα να διερευνήσει τα πολύπλοκα σύγχρονα συστήματα της παγκόσμιας παραγωγής και εμπορίου. Εξέτασε, επίσης, το ρόλο του σχεδιαστή στην διαμόρφωση αυτών των συστημάτων και στο πως μπορεί να συμβάλει στην πολυπόθητη κυκλική οικονομία, αποκαθιστώντας ταυτόχρονα τους φυσικούς οικοτόπους της γης.
Από τις προσωπικά αγαπημένες μας εκθέσεις για την επιτυχημένη και καλαίσθητη εφαρμογή μιας ιδέας που ελπίζαμε να υλοποιηθεί αρκετό καιρό τώρα, είναι η “Waste No More”, με επίκεντρο τη δουλειά της σχεδιάστριας μόδας Eileen Fisher, στην Gallery Kazarne. Πρόκειται για ένα επιτυχημένο παράδειγμα ενσωμάτωσης της τέχνης και του design στην συνειδητοποιημένη κατανάλωση, όχι του μέλλοντος αλλά του σήμερα.
Δεν θα γινόταν να κλείσουμε τη βόλτα μας χωρίς να σου δείξουμε το τεχνολογικό ενδιαφέρον του design, ειδικά μέσω της έκθεση “Manifestations – Superpowers” στο Veem Building του Strijp-S. Αυτό που κάποτε θα ονομάζαμε σενάριο επιστημονικής φαντασίας, τώρα πλέον είναι στα όρια του τετριμμένου και πολυσχολιασμένου, αλλά πάντα έχει να προσφέρει κάτι στην αστείρευτη συσσώρευση υποθετικών πληροφοριών για το μέλλον μας.
Τέλος, μερικές εικόνες από την πιο προσβάσιμη πλευρά του design, με την έκθεση των Dutch Design Awards 2019 και την συλλεκτική έκθεση διάσημων σχολών της Ευρώπης (AAlto University, Swedish school of textiles κ.α.).

At Dutch Design Week we found out everything about today’s design!

The design of the Netherlands nowadays is the main attraction of the country, and it is displayed every year at Dutch Design Week, in the small city of the North, Eindhoven. This year, we visited this big European celebration of design, we sneak into this multicolor kaleidoscope full of design of today’s and of tomorrow’s. We blended in with the thousands of visitors from all around the world and somehow drained ourselves with all the “must-see” and “hidden gems” of this endless exhibition, which has displayed ideas and proposals of more than 2.600 designers for this year.
From the Strijp-S area, where the heart of DDW beats, to the remote BioArt Lab with the experimental attitude, our tour gave us images, ideas and questions. The aftertaste is positive and light. But still, this experience was a good reminder that the overlapping ideas, the repeating themes and the constant mention to concepts of the past will always have a place to everything that is happening now.
The Graduation Show of Design Academy of Eindhoven, which displays all the bachelor and master projects of the Academy that brought the DDW to this city, was for us a certain coming back. With 181 projects overall, in this exhibition, we encountered crucial criticisms for the current practice of museums, innovative technological approaches, personal statements, critical research of today’s world and social proposals for the future.

As for the rest, the “Geo-Design: Junk – All That Is Solid Melts Into Trash” at the always crowded Van Abbemuseum absolutely absorbed us. This exhibition displays 18 projects, most of them research ones, by students of DAE, that converse about the junk and the e-waste on a global level. This wider spectrum of ideas successfully delves into the complex contemporary systems of global production and trade. Furthermore, it examines the role of the designer in the formation of these systems and how he could be an active participant in the circular economy that we so much long for, whilst restoring natural habitats.
Among our favorite exhibitions, we have listed the “Waste No More” in the Gallery Kazarne, which is based on the work of fashion designer Eileen Fisher, for the flourishing and high aesthetical implementation of an idea that we have been anticipating to be functioned for so long now. This is a successful example of embedded art and design to conscious consumption, no only for the future, but also for today.
Of course, our tour wouldn’t be enough without mentioning the interest in technological design, especially showed at “Manifestations – Superpowers” at Veem Building in Strijp-S. All the things that we have once thought were science fiction, now are almost common and widespread. Yet, every time, they have something new to add to the pile of speculative information for our future.
