Οι Synthetic θα φέρουν και πάλι πίσω τo καλό clubbing!

Η Θεσσαλονίκη είναι εδώ. Πάντα ήταν εδώ. Μπορεί να είχε χαθεί για καιρό, ή μάλλον να κρύφτηκε για λίγο, αλλά επιστρέφει και όσο περνάει ο καιρός, έρχεται όλο και πιο γρήγορα. Έχει περάσει καιρός από τις ένδοξες εποχές των μεγάλων parties, τόσος που εγώ τουλάχιστον, θυμάμαι αμυδρά κάποιες εικόνες, στην περιοχή του αεροδρομίου, όπου τα σταθμευμένα αυτοκίνητα των ανθρώπων που πήγαιναν σ’ αυτά, έφταναν ως εκεί που βλέπει το μάτι σου.

Ναι, υπήρχαν αυτά και μάλιστα δεν έχει περάσει και πολύς καιρός. Δε μιλάω για τις disco των 80’s και των 90’s, όταν οι άνθρωποι διασκέδαζαν στο Studio 51, στην Προξένου Κορομηλά. Εγώ δεν υπήρχα τότε. Μιλάω για τις εποχές του Decadance ή νωρίτερα, του Coco, στη στροφή της Επανομής. Εκείνες τις εποχές, που οι γυναίκες κουβαλούσαν σακούλες, με άκρως αποκαλυπτικά σορτσάκια και μπλουζάκια, που δε μπορούσαν να φορέσουν απ’ το σπίτι. Για να μπουν στις τουαλέτες και να γίνει  η μεταμόρφωση, έμπαιναν αρσακειάδες και έβγαιναν χορεύτριες. Εκείνες τις εποχές, η διασκέδαση απλωνόταν σε κάθε άκρη τις πόλης, από τα στέκια της Αρετσούς, μέχρι το Μύλο και τη Βίλκα, τότε που άρχισε να χρησιμοποιείται η λέξη “πολυχώρος”, για πρώτη φορά. Όμορφος κόσμος, χαλαρό ντύσιμο και πάντα χορευτική μουσική.

Πριν από μερικές ημέρες, πήρε το μάτι μου το line up του επόμενου μεγάλου πάρτι της ομάδας Synthetic. Μια ομάδα φτιαγμένη από άτομα, που αγαπούν την ηλεκτρονική μουσική και θέλουν, πραγματικά, να δώσουν άλλο αέρα στον τρόπο που γίνονται τα parties. Το line up περιελάμβανε δύο τέρατα, όπως τα χαρακτηρίζουν, της ηλεκτρονικής σκηνής, τους Juan Atkins και Robert Hood.

Οι Synthetic είναι ένα project, που αποτελείται από ένα δίκτυο ανθρώπων που συνεχώς μεγαλώνει. Συνάντησα τα ιδρυτικά μέλη στην έκθεση Detroit Compact, που γίνεται στο χώρο της Propaganda Rollin Co., με αφορμή το επόμενο party στο Principal Club Theater.

H ομάδα αυτή ξεκίνησε “παρεϊστικα”, όπως καθετί καλό, και όσο πάει, μεγαλώνει. Άνθρωποι, που έχουν την ίδια γνώμη για τη μουσική και για το πως πρέπει να τη διαχειρίζεται κάποιος. Μια γνώμη, την οποία έχουν αναπτύξει από μια σχέση συνεργασίας και επικοινωνίας.

Ξεκίνησαν, με κάποια μικρά parties, στα bars του κέντρου της Θεσσαλονίκης, όπου πέρασαν διάφοροι djs, που έπαιζαν πάντα, μαζί με του residents Pablo Diskko και Thomas Numan. Συνέχισαν, με ένα μεγαλύτερο event, στον χώρο του Block33, με καλεσμένους τους Makam, Moomin και τον Miltiade, αλλά πάντα πίστευαν, πως το περιορισμένο κοινό της Θεσσαλονίκης ήθελε κάτι παραπάνω.

Έτσι, αποφάσισαν να στήσουν και το επόμενό τους party, στο Principal Club Theater, με καλεσμένους δύο ανθρώπους, που με κάποιον τρόπο, επινόησαν την techno μουσική.

Ο Juan Atkins, μάλλον, διανύει την περίοδο της τελευταίας του περιοδείας, γιορτάζοντας έτσι τα 35 χρόνια του djing, καθώς και τα 30 χρόνια της Metroplex Records, που ο Juan ίδρυσε το 1985, κρυμμένος πίσω από τα ψευδώνυμα «Model 500» ή «Infiniti», τα οποία χρησιμοποιεί ακόμα και στις live εμφανίσεις του.

Από την άλλη, ο Robert Hood, αμερικανός dj και παραγωγός, με κύρια κατεύθυνση την minimal techno. Ιδρυτικό μέλος των Underground Resistance, μαζί με τους Mad Mike Banks και Jeff Mills. Κυκλοφόρησε λίγο καιρό πριν, το “Floorplan”, που ήταν για καιρό πρώτο στα charts του εξωτερικού. Έβγαλε ένα νέο edit του “Never Grow Old“, το οποίο ανακηρύχτηκε το πιο “πολυπαιγμένο” κομμάτι στο Amsterdam Dance Event. Οι δυο τους δεν έχουν συνεργαστεί σε ένα κοινό dj set, για περίπου 15 χρόνια.

Δεν είμαι σίγουρος για το αν η Θεσσαλονίκη είναι, ή θα είναι σύντομα, έτοιμη και ώριμη, να υποδεχθεί ξανά κάτι τέτοιο. Πάντως, το μόνο σίγουρο είναι πως πρέπει κάποια στιγμή, η ηλεκτρονική σκηνή να περάσει από το “underground”, στην πραγματικότητα που δημιουργούν τα σημερινά δεδομένα. Θα γούσταρα κι εγώ να μπλεχτώ με αυτούς, που θα πλήρωναν για να μπουν σε ένα σκοτεινό υπόγειο, που θα παίζει techno για ώρες, προσπαθώντας να πάρω ανάσα, αλλά πρέπει κάποια στιγμή, όλο αυτό να αρχίσει να εμπνέει και να παρακινεί ανθρώπους, που όταν τους μιλάς για techno μουσική, δε θα σε κοιτούν περίεργα.

Έτσι, ίσως βελτιωθούν κάπως τα πράγματα. Δεδομένου ότι ο κόσμος, εν μέσω μιας οικονομικής και πνευματικής κρίσης, ξοδεύει λιγότερα, πρέπει να προσέχει και που τα δίνει. Αυτό έχει ως αποτέλεσμα, να δικαιώνονται οι άνθρωποι που παραμένουν πιστοί σε αυτό που κάνουν και να χάνονται, όσοι, κάποια στιγμή, για προφανείς συνήθως λόγους, έχασαν τον έλεγχο, με μόνο σκοπό το κέρδος.

Οι ομάδα των Synthetic έχει σκοπό να συνεχίσει αυτή τη φιλοσοφία. Άλλωστε, για να βγει ένα καλό αποτέλεσμα, πρέπει να υπάρχει ένα συγκεκριμένο πλάνο. Ο κάθε συνεργάτης να εμπνέει τον άλλον. Δεν αξίζει να μετατρέψει το μοναδικό, σε κάτι κορεσμένο και εμπορικό. Πρέπει να βρεις τον τρόπο, να το κάνεις ακόμα πιο ενδιαφέρον.

Σίγουρα θα υπάρξει κάποιο είδος ανταμοιβής, για την πίστη των ανθρώπων, απέναντι σε συγκεκριμένα πράγματα! Υπήρχαν κάποτε εποχές, που οι Βερολινέζοι σουλατσάρανε στα clubs της Θεσσαλονίκης, για να πάρουν καμιά ιδέα, να στήσουν κάτι εκεί.

*To Detroit Compact φιλοξενείται στο art room της Propaganda Rollin Co, στην οδό Ισάυρων, και το επιμελήθηκαν οι ίδιοι, με υλικό από προσωπική συλλογή της ομάδας Synthetic και των φίλων τους. Είναι μια αναδρομική έκθεση όλων των στοιχείων, που σχετίζονται με την πόλη του Detroit, την σκηνή της techno/ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής, τα πρόσωπα και τις συνθήκες, μέσα από τις οποίες διαμορφώθηκαν και κυρίευσαν τα clubs σε όλο τον κόσμο και την διαδρομή, που έχουν κάνει οι εκπρόσωποί της στην Θεσσαλονίκη. Θα δείτε κυκλοφορίες, από δισκογραφικές εταιρείες του Detroit, φυλλάδια από τις εμφανίσεις των μουσικών, σε όλο τον κόσμο, και οπτικό υλικό των συνεντεύξεών τους, ηχογραφήσεις ζωντανών εμφανίσεων, τα βίντεο της μουσικής τους και ντοκιμαντέρ. Ο χώρος έκθεσης είναι το «ART ROOM» του Propaganda Rolling co. Store .

Thessaloniki is here. It has always been here. Maybe it was lost for a while, or rather hidden, but it keeps coming back and faster each time. It’s been a long while since those glorious parties. I barely remember, near the airport, a line of parked cars, streching as far as the eyes could reach.

Indeed, they were a thing. And I’m not referring to the discos of the ’80s and the ’90s, when people used to party at “Studio 51“, at Proksenou Koromila str. I wasn’t even born then. I’m talking about “Coco“, or later the era of “Decadance“. Those were the days when women used to carry bags of reveiling shorts and tops, because they were not allowed to wear them at home. Then, they would transform from church girls to dancers. Bach then the word “multi-use facitlity” was used for the first time and fun was spread across every inch of the city, from the locals of Aretsou, to Milos and Vilka. It was a world full of beauty, casual clothes and music to dance to.

I few days ago, I came across a line up for the next, big party of “Synthetic.” This is a group of people who share a love for electronic music and want to redefine the notion of “parties”. The line up included two of the greatest names of the electronic stage, Juan Atkins and Robert Hood.

“Synthetic” is a project of an ever growing network of people.With their next party at Principal Club Theater approaching, I met with the founding members, at the “Detroit Compact” exhibition which is held at the Propaganda Rolling Co. venue.

Like every other success story before them, this team started as a group of friends and keeps growing every day. Through a relation of cooperation and communication, these people came to share the same opinion about music and how music should be managed.

Everything started with some small parties in bars of central Thessaloniki, with different DJs each time who they were always playing with Pablo Diskko and Thomas Numan of “Residents”. Then, came a bigger event at “Block 33“, with Makam and Moomin as guests. Nontheless, they always believed that the audience of Thessaloniki, however limited, wanted something more. So, they decided to plan their next party at “Principal Club Theater” and bring as guests two men who, in a way, invented techno music.

Juan Atkins is probably on his last touring, celebrating this wasy not only his 35 years of DJing, but also the 30 years of Metroplex Records.This is a company that Juan founded in 1985, as “Model 500” or “Infiniti“, nicknames which he still uses in his live performances.

In the other hand there is Robert Hood, the american DJ and producer, who focuses mainly on minimal techno. He is a founding member of Undergournd Resistance, along with Mad Mike Banks and Jeff Mills. Recently, his “Floorplan” was released and stayed in the first place of the charts abroad, for a long time and after that, his new edit of “Never Grow Old“, was the most played track, according to the Amsterdam Dance Event. Atkins and Hood haven’t worked together on a set, for 15 years now.

I’m not sure whether Thessaloniki is or will be ready and mature to welcome something like that. But it is ceratain that electronic music must, at some point, make the passage from “underground”, because nowadays a new reality is shaping. It would be awesome if I could be part of the audience that pay to enter a dark basement and listen exclusively techno music, while I’m gasping for breath, but this is not the matter at hand. This kind of initiatives should inspire and stimulate people, so when you talk about techno music, nobody will look at you in a weird way.

Maybe this way, things will start to get better. Taking into consideration that the world goes through a crisis, which is economic as it is intellectual, we tend to spend less money. So it is important on who or what we spend it, because in this way people who remain loyal to what they do are brought forward, whereas those who strayed from their way in the name of profit, are forgotten.

The “Synthetic” group intends to continue on this course; because in order to create something good, there must be a specific plan, and those who work together ought to inspire one another. It’s no use to turn something unique in something mainstream. One needs to find the way to turn it into something even more interesting.

I am confident that there is goinf to be a kind of reward to those who remain loyal to certain things! There were days that people from Berlin strolled about the clubs in Thessaloniki, in the search of ideas to create something there. True story.

*Detroit Compact was prepared by Nikoleta Ioannou. It is a retrospective of all the elements related to Detroit, the stage of techno/electronic music, the people and the conditions under which was formed and dominated clubs globally, as well as the course of its representatives in Thessaloniki. The items are from personal collections. The visitor will see releases from Detroit’s recording companies, leaflets of the musicians’ performances from all over the world, as well as material from their interviews, recordings of live performances, their video clips and docimentaries. The exhibition venue is the ART ROOM of Propaganda Rolling co. Store.
